California & Steampunk

I had such a wonderful time in Huntington Beach, California last week. It was a spur of the moment kind of trip. Got a good deal on a round trip, (back-packed it so we wouldn’t have to pay for luggage).

We went to the beach, which was unseasonably hot at 91 degrees. Got sunburned, and I put on this wonderfully soothing aloe vera stuff that was to keep me from peeling. But today I noticed I am peeling on my chest. Ah, well. I’ll have to sunbathe to keep it up. Last night and tonight it rained–huge thunder boomers!

I’m so into Steampunk now. I read about it somewhere and it’s fascinating. It’s scifi, an era that never was, but one that steampunk_5_by_katbretphotographywe wish had been. An era where airships waged war in the skies, and corsets and cummerbunds were proper adventuring attire. The setting can post- apocalyptic with swashbuckling adventure. Or it can be in Victorian Times, but altered, with fantasy or steam machines that never were developed.

We’re going back to California in July; I’m hoping I’ll get to see Abney Park, a Steampunk rock band, although I think they are coming to San Diego sometime in September. But the band and customers dress in Steampunk, which is Victorian but altered, if that makes sense.

But Steampunk I like is a post apocalypse world where steam driven technology is the energy source. The author can come up with their own inventions and have the technology sprinkled with magic. I think it’s totally awesome.
